'alif: isolated form

Learn the Arabic alphabet:

'alifListen: 'alif

On the right is the basic (isolated) form of the letter 'alif.

'alif is pronounced like a in "bag" when it carries a hamza*.

'alif is pronounced like a in "care" when it doesn't carry a hamza.

 

*An Arabic word can't begin with a vowel. This is why 'alif in the initial position carries a hamza (see under "Examples of words" below).
